Urbański is back!
TSO's former chief conductor, Krzysztof Urbański, is back on the conductor's podium in Olavshallen. He has chosen works by the Polish composers Szymanowski and Weinberg; musical gems by composers that in recent years have been rediscovered by an ever-increasing audience. Stabat Mater is a fantastic composition to the text from the Middle Ages that uses melody and many musical elements from this time period, but in a soundscape that is clearly from the 20th century. The work became very important for later Polish composers and Szymanowski himself said of the soprano solo in the last movement that "it is the most beautiful I have written". Weinberg's Symphony is an excellent example of a creative composer who stayed within the 'anti-formalism' of the Soviet Union and its strict framework, but who nevertheless managed to write works with such quality and musicality that they deserved to resume their place in concert halls worldwide.
