Mouvance I–III is the culmination of a three-year artistic research project at the University of Bergen under the auspices of the Norwegian Artistic Research Programme. The project, with the title Wheels within wheels, has explored late Medieval compositions and performance practices in search for new approaches to music making. The artistic results of the research are highly varied, ranging from improvisations and settings by the musicians in a late Medieval style to performance acts and sound installations inspired by Medieval musical material. The project has been led by Jostein Gundersen. The international team includes the composers Alwynne Pritchard and Ruben Sverre Gjertsen as well as the ensemble Currentes.
Mouvance I: Mass
The first concert is a Mass program for the Feast of the Blessed Virgin, which in 2017 falls on the 27th of May. Some of the music is by two of the most remarkable composers in the late Middle Ages, Antonio Zacara da Teramo and Guillaume Dufay. Other parts have been developed by the performers, approaching the stylistic frameworks of the late Middle Ages, whilst also allowing space for timbral experimentation and electro-acoustical interventions.
