Mouvance I–III is the culmination of a three-year artistic research project at the University of Bergen under the auspices of the Norwegian Artistic Research Programme. The project, with the title Wheels within wheels, has explored late Medieval compositions and performance practices in search for new approaches to music making. The artistic results of the research are highly varied, ranging from improvisations and settings by the musicians in a late Medieval style to performance acts and sound installations inspired by Medieval musical material. The project has been led by Jostein Gundersen. The international team includes the composers Alwynne Pritchard and Ruben Sverre Gjertsen as well as the ensemble Currentes.
Mouvance III: Distortion
The third and last concert will present re-readings and distortions of emblematic medieval works, between the recognizable and the abstracted. The performance space is explored through the positions of the musicians and multichannel speaker setups. The musicians use existing medieval scores and performance practices in different ways: as starting point for improvised abstractions, as starting point for a new, elaborate work by Ruben Sverre Gjertsen, and also as recorded sound materials, processed and integrated in the performance. We hear traces and leftovers of works by Jacopo da Bologna, Guillaume Dufay, Johannes Ciconia and the manuscript Codex Faenza.
