Yiddish in Trondheim - Lecture with Stian Hårstad

Get tickets here
The Jewish immigration to Norway at the end of the 19th century brought with it increased cultural and linguistic diversity. The vast majority of the migrants had Yiddish as their first language, and they continued to use this to a large extent in their daily lives also in their new home country. However, it would prove difficult to pass on the Yiddish skills to the next generation. Several factors slowed the language trade, and Yiddish was already in sharp decline in the Jewish circles when the atrocities of the World War struck and did irreparable damage to all Jewish culture.

In this lecture, Stian Hårstad, professor at the Department of Language and Literature at NTNU, tells about the language that could once also be heard in Trønder homes, and which was actually used as a stage language well into the 1930s.

The Jewish Museum Trondheim welcomes everyone who wants to participate. The event is free.
