Jenny Frøysa's Artful Ensemble (JFAE) is saxophonist and composer Jenny Frøysa's first project under her own name. The work “Pauline Boty: bring her out!” is inspired by the pop artist Pauline Boty, who was active in London in the 1960s but did not receive the attention she deserved during her lifetime.
Like Boty's art, the music is inspired by elements of pop culture from recent decades, but set in a swinging jazz world. The result could perhaps be called jazz with a twist, where the textual aspect takes a big place. These aim to inform the audience about Boty's life and art, while at the same time drawing lines and parallels to gender equality challenges that still exist today.
The expression is rich, playful and referential, and plays on the diverse creative strengths of the musicians in the band.
The band consists of musicians with strong ties to the jazz community in Trondheim, with young and active musicians such as Ingeborg Gravem Sollid (vocals), Liv Ellen Rønning (vocals and alto sax), Tuva Olsson (trumpet), Anna Ueland (keyboards), Kertu Aer (double bass), veteran Tor Haugerud (drums), and Jenny Frøysa on bary sax.
Jenny Frøysa (b. 1997) is a musician and composer, living in Trondheim. She is active in many forward-thinking projects that have made a name for themselves in the jazz and improv scene, including PHØNIX, Cosmic Swing Orchestra, Leirblaa and Subcurrent. She is also active with the Trondheim Jazz Orchestra, and tours regularly in Norway and Europe, in addition to having released several albums. She also teaches at the Jazzlinja at NTNU in Trondheim.
