For the festival in 2020, Olavsfest in Trondheim launched a booking quite out of the ordinary: The Swans were to play in Nidarosdomen. A band that does not occupy a large place in the consciousness of most people, but which over 40 years has built up a dedicated congregation of fans. The band's angular uncompromisingness makes their art something that costs a bit to surrender to, and the booking of the band can rightly be said to be of the brave sort. Then Covid-19 came, and the concert with The Swans was cancelled. After this, much water has flowed in the Nidelva, and for many reasons it is unthinkable that Olavsfestdagene should stage a concert like this in the foreseeable future.

So, in autumn 2022, The Swans' frontman Michael Gira embarked on a solo tour where he played in various church spaces around Europe, and one of these concerts was captured on film by the Oslo-based Norwegian-British C. S. Nicholson. With Michael Gira in solitary majesty, a guitar and a church space, we witness a monumental experience in black and white. Perhaps this film gives a small hint of what we in Trondheim missed out on in 2020?
