Experience one of the greatest silent film classics of all time at Nidaros Cathedral, while organist Mattias Wager improvises live on the cathedral’s majestic Steinmeyer organ!
This is not the first time Nidaros Cathedral has opened its doors to a silent film concert, but it remains a rare experience. With its soaring arches, intricate carvings, and majestic atmosphere, the cathedral is one of the most unique venues for film screenings. It is hard to imagine a better setting for experiencing a timeless film classic than this historic and atmospheric building, and the evening will offer a grand combination of cinematic art and live music.
During the screening, Mattias Wager will improvise on the cathedral’s magnificent Steinmeyer organ. He is the resident organist at Storkyrkan, Stockholm Cathedral, and is known as one of the great improvisers, a prominent name on the international organ scene.
About the film:
The General by Buster Keaton celebrates its 100th anniversary and stands as a cornerstone of film history. With its precise timing and physical comedy, this remarkably lively centenarian is as entertaining as ever! Keaton stars as the young train engineer Johnnie Gray. He loves two things: the Southern belle Annabelle and his locomotive, The General. The American Civil War breaks out, and The General is stolen by Union spies — with Annabelle on board. What follows is a breathtaking train chase that escalates in speed, danger, and wildly inventive stunts.
About the event:
The cathedral doors open at 17:30, and the film starts at 18:00. Although the organisers will do their best to keep the atmosphere warm and comfortable, audiences are advised to dress warmly — Nidaros Cathedral is known for its cool temperatures, especially in winter.
