SUMÉ: THE SOUND OF A REVOLUTION
Inuk Silis Høegh, 2014, 74 min, approved for all ages
Sumé – The Sound of a Revolution tells the story of four idealistic students who released the world's first rock album with Greenlandic lyrics, and through it put Greenland on the map. (The album is called Sumut - check it out!)
In addition to Sumé singing in their mother tongue, a language that in the 1970s was losing ground to the Danish language, the band was a source of great inspiration through their political lyrics about oppression, colonialism and standing up against injustice. They gained so much influence on the political level that in many ways they contributed to Greenland gaining home rule a few years after the band broke up.
This is the story of a group of young men who strongly contributed to changing society on the world's largest island, Greenland. They did not become rich, but they proved that music with an important message can contain the seeds of a revolution.
