THE SKIT VILLAGE IN STJØRDAL - a conversation about exclusion and poverty

Is there poverty in Norway? What does it look like? How does exclusion manifest itself in Norway in the 2000s? With the podcast Skitbyen, Berit and Ole Martin Hafsmo have made Norway talk about what it is like to live on the sidelines of the Norwegian glamour scene. Is Skitbyen also found in Stjørdal?

Berit Hafsmo is known from the radio documentary Skitbyen, where she openly talks about life as a disabled person and her experiences of being homeless (UFB). Despite a challenging everyday life, she appears as an eternal optimist. Her story has reached a large audience through her son Ole Martin Hafsmo, who directed the award-winning series for NRK.

Ole Martin Hafsmo, son of Berit. He is a film director from the Norwegian Film School. He has previously directed feature films, dramas, TV comedy and commercials. Examples of productions are Uti Vår Hage, Stories From Norway and the music video for The Fox with Ylvis. Skitbyen is his first radio documentary.

Skitbyen is a 2-season radio documentary produced for NRK. It is about Berit Hafsmo who is broke, disabled, threatened with eviction – and an indomitable optimist. The series won the award for best documentary series in the Prix Europa 2023.

The Leikvoll house is located in Halsenvegen, in the middle of the center of Stjørdal. The owners have offered Stjørdal Museum to take over the small house, in exchange for it being moved to the museum. Leikvoll was built in the mid-1930s, in a time marked by political unrest, urbanization and economic uncertainty. Not unlike our own time. The house contains many stories about social and economic exclusion, and the exclusion that comes from widespread drug use.
