Åkersvika Nature Reserve was protected by royal decree on July 26, 1974.

The purpose of the conservation was to preserve an important wetland area with associated plant communities, bird life and other wildlife naturally associated with the area. Fishing rules in the nature reserve: From June 1 to March 31, fishing in the nature reserve is permitted according to normal fishing rules. Yarn fishing is prohibited throughout the year. During the important bird migration months April and May, fishing is only allowed from all bridges. Bird life can be observed from two viewing towers.
