Audio guidance in Norwegian, English and German.
The Route,
The ride starts at the Dronning Sonjas Plass. On the left side is city hall. We drive onto Keiser Wilhelmsgate and pass the market square and the prison. Next is Borgundveien which is Ålesunds longest street and the previous main road to the city centre and runs parallel to Borgundfjorden. We pass Volsdalen church and the "Color Line" Stadium which opened in 2005.
Now starts the climb up towards Fjellstua. . While we take the turn and drive off Borgundveien we pass Volsdalstunet where the house is from 1813. The view gets just better and more spectacular both inwards toward the mountains and outwards toward the sea on our way up.
When we reach Fjellstua we'll take a 10-15 minute break and enjoy the view.
On our way down we pass Fjelltunveien and the apartment building that collapsed in 2008 and this is also where the great city fire stopped in 1904. Next is Storledbakken where we can see up towards "Vallehuset" or "the miracle house", which by a miracle was the only house that avoided the flames during the city fire. Next is Utstillingsplassen and the city park before we drive onto Storgata and pass Lihaugen with Rica Parken Hotel. In Skaregata we'll take a left and see the restaurant "Skateflua and the tourist office.
To our right we can see towards Molja with the oldest breakwater in Norway and the lighthouse from 1858. The lighthouse is now a wedding suite belonging to Brosundet Hotel. Driving along Skansegata parallel to Brosundet we'll see St. Olavs plass and Rønnebergbua on our left side. Here we'll make a right past Dronning Sonjas.
We pass "Arbeideren" which is the former community centre in Ålesund. Now we cross Hellebroa which connects the two central islands Nørvøya and Aspøya together. Well across we drive onto Apotekergata. On our left we'll see Jugendstilsenteret. At the end of Apotekergata we turn up towards Øvregata which leads to Ålesund church. On our way back to the cruiseterminal from here we'll pass lots of beautiful Jugend style houses.
The entire trip takes around 70 minutes at a nice and comfortable speed.
