Discover Askim by bike!

A bike ride featuring power plants, nickel mines, farm shops, and encounters with animals. Parts of the route are safe for families with children to bike, as it follows walking and biking paths or gravel roads the entire way. You can choose to cycle only on the traffic-safe bike path. It is marked in green. The section marked in red has more traffic and is best suited for experienced cyclists.

Option 1 – The Kykkelsrud Loop (Traffic-Safe Route)

Café Sammen

The hike starts at Askim Train Station, with Café Sammen—located in the old fire station behind the train station—as the hub. Here you can buy delicious pastries or cakes to take along on your ride, or grab a coffee while Kristine gives you some advice and tips for the trip.

Askim Fruit and Berrypress

Cycle along Osloveien on the walking and biking path toward the Romsåsen mines. Along the way, you’ll cycle past the Askim Fruit and Berry Press. There are plenty of good reasons to stop by this lovely shop, which offers a wide selection of juices, jellies, and local food products from all over Norway. The shop also sells gifts and home decor, and features a small café that serves apple waffles and slush, among other things. Cycle up the hills and past the first roundabout. Just before the next roundabout, cross the road and turn onto Kykkelsrudveien. Turn right and follow the gravel road to the Romsåsen nickel mines.

Romsåsen Nickel Mines

The mine is the largest of the 30 nickel mines in Norway, and the only one still open for guided tours (groups by reservation only). The mines were in operation from 1866 to 1876 and consist of three levels with large mine shafts. The area is a great spot for a break along the way and features a shelter at “Nikkeltunet” as well as campfire sites, benches, and tables at “Skogtunet.”

Kykkelsrud Hydroelectric Power Plant

After the detour to Romsåsen, the trip continues toward the Kykkelsrud Hydroelectric Power Plant, located in the Glomma River basin. We’re greeted by a majestic complex with impressive buildings. Kykkelsrud is one of Norway’s oldest power plants, with the first phase of construction going into operation in 1903. The power plant harnessed a 26.5-meter drop at Kykkelsrudfossen. Today, the river power plant is considered a cultural heritage site.

David Lundsrud’s Honey

From Kykkelsrud, cycle onto Kykkelsrudlinna. Here you’ll find beekeeper David Lundsrud. He sells summer honey starting in August and fresh heather honey starting in September by appointment. For contact information and more details. Continue cycling along Kykkelsrudlinna until you reach Kykkelsrudveien again. From there, the bike ride takes you back the same way you came, if you prefer to take the safest route in terms of traffic.

Option 2: The Skjolden Loop (a busier route, suitable for experienced cyclists)

After passing the Askim Fruit and Berry Press, turn right onto Skjoldenveien and follow it until you reach Fladmark Farm.

Fladmark Farm Market

We started small with goats and chickens in 2022 and sell both meat and eggs from our own farm. In the summer of 2024, we started keeping bees, and now you can buy summer honey from us. We’ve also added alpacas and offer enjoyable goat or alpaca walks (which must be booked in advance). The farm shop is self-service and open 24/7. Thirsty cyclists can buy cold soda, fruit juice, and apple cider, as well as eggs from the farm, which can be enjoyed on the benches around the farmyard. Now it’s time to head back toward Askim. Cycle along Skjoldenveien until you reach the intersection with Revaugveien. Turn onto this road and cycle toward Revaug Farm.

Revaug Farm

At Revaug, they have 7,500 free-range chickens and sell fresh farm eggs from a self-service stand on the farm. For more information. The route now continues along Revaugveien until Vammaveien takes over. Continue cycling past Moen School toward Askim Train Station, where the tour ends.
