Free-of-charge fishing in Mjøsa
Catch the big one
Mjøsa is Norway’s largest lake, and has stocks of large brown trout – a species that feed on other fish. Furthermore, it is the main spawning ground for the fast-growing Hunder trout. The most common fishing method for this species is trolling where one or more fishing lines are drawn through the water after a boat.
Mjøsa covers an area of 365 sq. km and is 117 km long. Its largest tributary is Gudbrandsdalslågen flowing in from the north. A total of 20 fish species have been recorded in the lake.
Fishing in Mjøsa is free of charge
Fishing with rod and handline is permitted all year round. Trolling is permitted during the periods 1 May – 31 August and 1 October – 31 December. When trolling, only four lures per boat may be used. Lures with more than four hooks are prohibited. All trout under 50 cm caught in Mjøsa, measured from the tip of the snout to the fork of the tail, must be released back into the water immediately – dead or alive.

Launch your boat where you like
Mjøsa offers excellent boat launching facilities. There are numerous strategically placed slipways along the stretch from Lillehammer to Eidsvoll. Some of the locations are Biri, Moelv, Brumunddal, Gjøvik, Kapp, Hamar, Tingnes, and Totenvika.
