Norway's oldest Baroque Theatre - a cultural institution in Halden! The Theatre contains over 100 original stage sets from 1838 - 1916, and is still an important and popular stage for theater and musical performances.

Fredrikshald Theatre is Norway’s only preserved Baroque theatre.

Built in 1838 for the town’s citizens — not princes and kings — the theatre represents a unique cultural heritage building and a vibrant venue for performing arts and public engagement today.

The building was designed by Balthazar Nicolay Garben and constructed using brick-filled timber framing. It houses an auditorium with a raked stage floor, original scenery, and a collection of historical stage machinery that offers rare insight into Norwegian theatre traditions. In addition, you’ll find a ballroom and lounges that reflect the town’s social life over nearly 200 years.

Today, Fredrikshald Theatre is used for concerts, performances, events, and lectures. Both professional and amateur groups use the venue throughout the year, with the exception of the summer months. Use of the theatre is adapted to the building’s protected status and limited to approximately 100 event days per year.

The auditorium seats up to 256 people. All or parts of the theatre can be rented for performances, meetings, or other occasions. Guided tours can be booked. Visit our website for information about rentals, events, and opening hours:
