Haugar Art Museum

Haugar Art Museum is located on a hill in central Tønsberg, in the former Seamen's School. The museum presents Norwegian and international contemporary art through changing exhibitions and highlights from its own collection. The historic brick building provides a distinctive setting for exploring art.

Haugar presents artists whose works explore a wide range of materials, ideas and artistic expressions. Exhibitions feature painting, printmaking, sculpture and installations, bringing together established artists and different perspectives on contemporary art.

The museum's collection exhibition features a regularly changing selection of works, including pop art, abstraction and material-based art by Norwegian and international artists.

Andy Warhol and the museum's collection

An important part of Haugar's collection consists of works by American pop artist Andy Warhol, including his After Munch series, inspired by motifs from Norwegian artist Edvard Munch. The collection also includes works by artists such as Siri Aurdal, Elisabeth von Krogh, Jean-Michel Basquiat and Pål Vigeland. The artworks on display change as exhibitions are updated or individual works are loaned to other institutions. Throughout the year, Haugar also presents temporary exhibitions exploring different artists, themes and artistic traditions.

Art for children and families

Haugar offers activities that encourage children to explore art in their own way. Picture hunts, creative tasks and workshops give young visitors opportunities to look closely at artworks and experiment with their own ideas. Family activities vary throughout the year. Guided tours, museum shop and café

For a deeper introduction to the exhibitions, Haugar offers private guided tours for groups by arrangement, including visits outside regular opening hours. The museum shop stocks art books, exhibition catalogues, postcards, jewellery, ceramics and gifts. Visitors can enter the shop without purchasing a museum ticket. Uro Café and Bar is also located at the museum, serving coffee, baked goods and lunch. The café hosts events and offers evening opening on selected days.

Plan your visit

Haugar Art Museum is located at Gråbrødregaten 17 in central Tønsberg. The museum is normally open Tuesday to Friday from 11 am to 4 pm, and Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 6 pm. It is closed on Mondays. Special opening hours may apply on public holidays and during events.

The museum has lifts between exhibition floors, accessible toilets and designated accessible parking near the courtyard wall. Pushchairs are not permitted inside exhibition areas, but the museum has pushchairs available to borrow.

Haugar is approximately a nine-minute walk from Tønsberg railway station.
