Follow the coast from Viste to Tungenes lighthouse at the northern tip of Jæren. Along the way, the route passes through an open cultural landscape with beaches, small harbours, historic sites and wide views of the sea.

The hike follows the coastline north through a varied landscape rich in history. The sea is close by for much of the route, while the scenery alternates between beaches, rocky shores, farmland and small harbours.

Cultural heritage along the route

If you have time, you can make a detour to Vistnestunet, a well-preserved traditional Jæren farmstead dating from the late 19th century. The farm includes a traditional Jæren house, barn and bakehouse and offers an insight into rural life in earlier times.

Further along the coast, you will encounter several cultural heritage sites and traces of the area's history. Grøderøysa is located near Vistnes, and there are also remains from the Second World War along the route.

Børaunen and Sandestranden

One of the most distinctive natural features along the way is Børaunen by Sandebukta. This large moraine ridge consists of rounded stones shaped by ice and the sea over long periods of time. The area is protected and forms part of the characteristic coastal landscape of northern Jæren.

At Sandestranden, you pass a sandy beach that makes a pleasant place to stop for a break.

Towards Tungenes lighthouse

The route continues north towards Tungenes, which marks the northern end of Jæren and the beginning of the approach to Stavanger. Tungenes lighthouse was established in 1828 and is now a museum and cultural venue.

At the lighthouse, the landscape opens up towards the sea and the shipping lane beyond, providing a fitting end to the hike through Randaberg's open coastal and cultural landscape.

Stay safe and respect the cultural landscape

The coast between Viste and Tungenes is open and exposed to changing weather. Take care on slippery rocks and keep well away from the sea in strong winds and high waves. The route passes through grazing land and cultivated countryside: close gates behind you, keep your distance from livestock, keep dogs under control and stay on established trails.
