With an extensive network of marked trails and endless opportunities for nature experiences, this is the perfect destination for exploring the mountains on foot – whether you’re an adventurer, a family with children, a leisure seeker, or a retiree.

Here are some of the best hikes in Oppdal:

Easy hikes:

Hike in Kåsen – a varied hiking area with trails for everyone, shelters, and beautiful viewpoints. Several route options from 3–7 km with 150 meters of elevation gain.

Svarthaugen (954 m a.s.l.) – a short, family-friendly hike with lovely views over the center of Oppdal. Perfect for a quick afternoon outing. 4 km round trip and 250 meters of elevation gain.

Moderate hikes:

Raudhovden (972 m a.s.l.) – a short and pleasant hike through varied terrain, offering magnificent views over Gjevilvassdalen. 5.1 km round trip and 299 meters of elevation gain.

Våttåhaugen (1152 m a.s.l.) – a great hike for all ages with varied terrain and fine views over Oppdal. 7.1 km round trip and 400 meters of elevation gain.

Bårdsfjellet (1146 m a.s.l.) – a popular hike that combines gravel roads, marshland, and mountain terrain. Enjoy panoramic views of Oppdal from the summit cairn. 7.1 km round trip and 350 meters of elevation gain.

These peaks can also be tackled as trail runs for those who enjoy running. Mountain running is a modern take on traditional hiking – swap the treadmill, asphalt, or gravel roads for soft natural trails. Choose distances and terrain that suit your fitness level. The mountain terrain is easily accessible, with quick access above the tree line, and much of the landscape is runnable. Oppdal’s mountains are characterized by wide plateaus and gentle summits rather than sharp peaks and steep ridges, offering truly outstanding experiences.

Challenging hikes:

Blåhøa (1671 m a.s.l.) – a spectacular hike through Gjevilvassdalen leading to one of the most popular summits in Trollheimen. Challenging but highly rewarding. 20 km round trip and 1,000 meters of elevation gain.

Storskrymten (1985 m a.s.l.) – the highest mountain in Oppdal, offering breathtaking views from the summit. A true mountain expedition, as the peak is located far from the nearest road. 30 km round trip and 1,400 meters of elevation gain.

Trollhetta (1616 m a.s.l.) – a hike through dramatic mountain formations with stunning views. Starting at Trollheimshytta: 16.6 km round trip and 1,000 meters of elevation gain.

The Trollheimen Triangle – an iconic circular route through the heart of Trollheimen, connecting three DNT cabins: Gjevilvasshytta, Jøldalshytta, and Trollheimshytta. The hike can be customized with varying distances and elevation gains for each stage. Total: 58.4 km and 2,200 meters of elevation gain.

Okla (1580 m a.s.l.) – a long but manageable mountain hike leading to a vast plateau with views of Trollheimen and the Sunndalsfjella mountains. 15 km round trip and 900 meters of elevation gain.
