Innveien on Veiholmen – a short coastal walk

Innveien is a short, easy coastal path on Veiholmen, on the island of Smøla. The walk covers three kilometres with about 28 metres of total ascent, and normally takes between half an hour and three hours, depending on whether you go there and back or take the longer loop. The path suits the whole family, and in summer a pair of light trainers is enough.

From the sign near Veiholmen kindergarten you can walk straight to the trail box and back the same way. Many choose to extend the walk by following the path further up to the seamark "Verken", before taking the road back to the starting point.

At the top of Verken you're rewarded with a fine panoramic view over Veiholmen and the open sea beyond, a good spot to sit down with your packed lunch. Here you'll also find a black stone tower, originally built to signal a source of fresh water to passing sailors, and a lookout point from the Second World War that tells a little of the island's history.

The walk brings you close to the open sea and the shoreline, and you may well spot plenty of birdlife along the way, a fitting reminder that Smøla is known for its seabird colonies. Innveien can be walked all year round, though there are no facilities along the path, so remember to bring your own food and drink.
