Merdø – a beach paradise outside Arendal.
Merdø is a charming island at the entrance to Arendal – a little slice of Southern Norway with white wooden houses, blue sea, and some of the region’s most beautiful beaches.
Here you’ll find shallow sandy beaches perfect for families with children. The little ones can build sandcastles and splash safely in the clear water, while the adults relax in the sun and enjoy the calm coastal atmosphere.
Bring a picnic, a towel, and some beach toys – and turn your day into a mini holiday. If you haven’t packed food, Merdø Kro is located right by the beach, serving Neapolitan pizza, light summer dishes, cold drinks – and, of course, ice cream!
For a touch of culture between swims, visit Merdøgaard Museum, located just by the beach. The museum offers a glimpse into the island’s fascinating maritime history, dating back to the 1300s, with guided tours during the summer.
Merdø is car-free and easily accessible by ferry from Pollen in Arendal’s town centre – the trip takes only a few minutes. The boats MF Merdø and MF Trau run every half hour during the summer months. You can also arrive by private boat and dock at the guest pier.
Whether you’re here for a refreshing swim, a lazy beach day, or a quiet moment in the sun, Merdø is the very essence of a Southern Norwegian summer.
