A beloved Oslo theatre in the heart of the city.

The National Theatre is Norway’s main stage for theatre and an iconic cultural building in the heart of Oslo. Here you’ll find both the Main Stage and the Amphitheatre Stage – and now also the Theatre Bar, which is open to everyone.

The National Theatre is one of Norway’s most visited theatres and a favourite among both Oslo residents and visitors. With its two stages – the Main Stage and the Amphitheatre Stage – the theatre offers a wide range of performances, from classic works to innovative contemporary drama.

The Main Stage – Hovedscenen – which opened in 1899, is a magnificent theatre space with a historic atmosphere and seating for over 700 audience members. The Amphitheatre Stage – Amfiscenen – is a more intimate and modern venue, allows for closeness and experimentation. Both stages are located in the iconic theatre building at Johanne Dybwad Square, flanked by statues of Henrik Ibsen and Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson.

The National Theatre also offers guided tours in Norwegian and English, providing insight into the theatre’s history, architecture, and stagecraft.
In the foyer, you’ll find the new Theatre Bar, open to all – whether you’re attending a performance or simply want to enjoy a coffee, refreshments, a glass of wine, or a cocktail in a stylish and inviting setting.
