Exciting history in a unique maritime setting.

The Norwegian Maritime Museum is situated in beautiful surroundings on the waterfront on the Bygdøy peninsula. The museum presents Norwegian maritime history, shipbuilding and underwater technology.

Exhibition highlights

"Reconstruction of a Viking boat" - The new exhibition focuses on the traditional craft and boat building of the Viking Age. Here you can see one of the original boats from Gokstadhaugen. See the reconstruction of this boat on an open stage. Experience boat building and experimental archeology up close.
The Boat Hall, with its iconic triangular shape, has reopened with a fantastic exhibition about life along Norway's coast, Sjøveien. Here you will find Norway's most important and only nationwide collection of open traditional boats. You can also see one of the shipwrecks from Oslo and Bjørvika, which has been named Barcode 8. This is on display as it was found in the field, and dates back to the end of the 16th century.
The Ship: The Stokkebåten – Norway's oldest boat, dating back to the year 200 B.C. is part of the exhibition.
Gramsalen: more than 40 maritime paintings by famous painters such as Hans Gude, Christian Krohg and Axel Revold.
En route: Experience the largest artefact of the museum, a part of the boat Sandnæs.
To the Sea!: People and their stories of travels on the sea from the past 1000 years. 
Shipping and the corona crisis: meet seafarers who tell about how the pandemic has affected their everyday work.
Discover the sea: an exhibition about myths, monsters and the heroes of the sea.

Voyages with the Chief and Sally Jones: Gorilla Sally Jones' adventure-filled life is a story of promises, hopes and cruel betrayal.
