The Bjørnstad Ship

  • A rock carving - a ship
  • Visit Website

The Bjørnstad Ship is Norway's, and probably Northern Europe's, largest single petroglyph.

It consists of one large and two smaller ship carvings, the large one about 4x1.5 meters. Here are also two carvings that are quite similar to each other, are twin gods? The granite wall with the petroglyphs is powerful and may have been part of religious rituals.

You can find the petroglyph by driving Haugeveien (county road 583) approx. 3 km from Hafslund chapel, then follow the signs to Bjørnstadskipet. After the exit, follow the gravel road until you see a signpost, before you have passed the residential house. Here there is a small parking lot. Follow the path on foot about five hundred meters.
