Uranienborg is a viewpoint in the middle of Mandal, where you can see almost the entire town and out to the sea.
Uranienborg, or Torjusheia as the mountain is called, is a beautiful viewpoint in the city, 62 meters above sea level.
The name Uranienborg was given to the first lookout hut built here in 1862, in memory of the Russian ship of the line Ingermanland’s wreck off the coast in 1842. The Ingermanland’s telescope is said to have stood here. Some believe it was named after Tycho Brahe’s observatory near Copenhagen!
During World War II, there were three gun positions on Uranienborg, and the mountain is pierced with tunnels and bunkers.
Magnificent views over the entire town and the archipelago. The lookout hut is relatively new, with cleared paths and new benches.
Follow Torjusheigata from the square to the intersection with Grensegata, where a sign between two houses points right towards Uranienborg. From here, it is easy to find the path/stairs to the top. An alternative is to take the stairs at the entrance to the parking garage in the pedestrian street, between Edgars and Husfliden.
Length: approx. 0.8 km round trip | Duration: approx. 15–30 min | Difficulty: easy, but with some climbing
