Hidden in the moraine by the mighty glacier, it's hard to spot Nordenskiöld Lodge with the naked eye. The cabin offers a breath-taking view of the majestic Svalbard mountains and the azure glacier. Join our snowmobile expedition to our remote lodge.

This is the place that gives you a taste of the good old cabin life in Svalbard. Far off the beaten track, Nordenskiöld Lodge is located in the magnificent Arctic wilderness. Enjoy the simple life and a digital detox without electricity and running water. The silence is only interrupted by the glacier's crackling sounds. The large living room windows lets the nature enter the room and offers a spectacular view of the mountains and the mighty blue glacier. Welcome to Nordenskiöld Lodge.

Day 1
09.30 am: You will be picked up from your hotel or guesthouse in Longyearbyen.

Our adventure begins at Basecamp Explorer Expedition Office where all participants gather. Once the guide provides essential information and a safety briefing, you will be equipped with warm winter clothing and your own snowmobile. The drive to Nordenskiöld Lodge spans approximately 120 km and takes around six to seven hours, depending on weather conditions, planned stops, and group dynamics. Our route will take us across frozen fjords, past majestic mountains and over glaciers cowered in snow. As we continue driving northwards towards the glaciers in Olav V land, we will finally reach the Nordenskiöld Lodge. Upon arrival in the late afternoon, you will have time to settle into your room before dinner is served by your hosts. Please inform us of any food allergies prior to the trip, considering the remote location of the destination.

Day 2
Morning coffee and breakfast will be served according to the group's pace and preferences for the day's activities. Although the time and guide are at your disposal, our experienced guides will suggest recommended tours. By snowmobile, we will explore areas around Nordenskiöld Lodge that are inaccessible on a day trip from Longyearbyen, offering a unique opportunity to venture off the beaten track and to experience remote gems that few visitors have the chance to see. Along the way, we will provide a hot lunch and drinks. We’ll head back to the cabin in the afternoon. Before dinner, you can also enjoy the warmth of the wood-fired sauna, relax with a good book, or simply enjoy the silence. After a day spent in the Arctic wilderness, allow yourself to process and absorb the experience.

Day 3
After enjoying morning coffee and breakfast, we will plan our day's activities. Today, we will admire the breath taking Arctic landscapes on foot. Your guide will determine a suitable route, allowing us to truly experience the Arctic silence without relying on our snowmobiles. The serene and tranquil surroundings create a feeling of solitude and wonder. We will provide a hot lunch and drinks during our expedition, and before dinner, you can unwind in the cabin with a good book and some coffee while also enjoying the sauna.

Day 4
After a good night's sleep and breakfast, we will prepare our snowmobiles and begin our journey back to civilization in Longyearbyen. Based on the current weather forecast and recent snow and ice conditions, the guide will pick the best route back. We will make a lunch stop along the way, and the adventure concludes at Basecamp Explorer's Expedition Office, where it all started. You will return the equipment and clothing before the guide drives you back to your hotel or guesthouse around 4 pm.

Driver's license:
Valid driver's license for car or motorcycle required for snowmobiling. This must be presented to the guide before departure. Any snowmobile trip on Svalbard needs at least two snowmobiles without passengers for the trip to be carried out. This is for safety reasons, and if a snowmobile stops, we must have space enough to bring everyone home. We reserve the right to change the number of passengers and passengers in the group if necessary.

Physical requirements:
This trip is not suitable for persons suffering from back pains or pregnant women. This is due to safety for your safety and wellbeing, and Basecamp Explorer can unfortunately not take responsibility for health problems if this advice is neglected.

Language:
Safety is our top priority during our trips. It is necessary for you to be able to communicate in English or a Scandinavian language if you want to join our excursions. The tour language (English or a Scandinavian language) will be chosen based on the group's language skills.

Weather conditions in Svalbard:
In Svalbard, weather conditions can change quickly. We can meet heavy winds, snowstorms, thick fog, crevasses and lack of snow or ice. This means we might need to make changes to the planed route, and this might lead us not arriving to the planned destination. It can also mean that we need to use a different transportation style or accommodation than what was described in the program. We will always do our outmost to give our guests a great experience in the Arctic, but we must be aware the challenges of the destination for our guest’s safety.

More than travel:
As part of Basecamp Explorer Spitsbergen’s efforts to be climate neutral, we add an additional CO2 and environmental investment of NOK 250* per guest.  This is donated in its entirety to do good projects contributing to a sustainable future in our destinations.
