Welcome to the world's northernmost commercial cabin. Discover the cozy lodge hidden in the moraine by the mighty Nordenskiöld glacier. Spend your days glacier hiking or paddle along the glacier front and experience the true Arctic silence.
Join us on a unique adventure to Nordenskiöld glacier!
On this trip you will be cast far away from Longyearbyen right into the heart of the arctic land and to our Nordenskiöld Lodge. The Lodge lies in front of the magnificent Nordenskiöld glacier. With no running water or electricity Nordenskiöld Lodge is a true expedition cabin, but with modern comforts. We use wood to heat up the cabin and get our drinking water from the melting glacier. There are 5 big bedrooms with fantastic arctic view, 10 comfortable beds, indoor toilet, and a traditional sauna. The cabin is modern and comfortable with big windows giving away to the mighty glacier.
Laying in the glacier moraine the cabin is well hidden from any bypassers This is a place where you truly can enjoy the arctic silence. You can enjoy your breakfast while looking right over to the magnificent Nordenskiöld glacier or relax in the sunny terrace with warm coffee and watch polar bear hunt for seals on the sea ice.
During the Adventure Week we will do several trips from the Nordenskiöld cabin. We will decide the different activities per day and destinations depending on the weather. The itinerary below is only advisory and can be changed during the adventure week. We will do our best to make sure you get to experience all the activities mentioned.
Day 1
The guide will pick you up at your hotel at 08:00 am. We will go through today’s program and give you an important safety briefing before we start making our way to the expedition store and afterwards to the harbour. Once at Nordenskiöld cabin we will enjoy an outdoor lunch and get familiar with the cabin and the surroundings. After lunch it is time to head out into the arctic nature and explore the beauty of the isolated outpost. We return to the cabin in the evening, where you will be served a delicious dinner and get to enjoy a pre-heated sauna. Accommodation in double rooms.
Day 2
We start the day with good breakfast and if the weather is good, we can spend the morning to learn how to paddle a kayak. We have steady and reliable double kayaks at Basecamp Nordenskiöld so we all can paddle in pairs. Kayaking is a perfect way to get around in the arctic and the very traditional way to explore the arctic shorelines. After the learning period we will set out for daytrip to Brucebyen. We will paddle across the magnificent glacier front with ice bergs arctic wildlife. On the other side of the fjord lies Brucebyen. The small settlement consists of huts that where build 100 years ago by Scottish geologist. The guide will tell you about the fascinating story from the history. After a long day in the cold arctic sea, it is wonderful to relax in the sauna and afterwards enjoy a delicious dinner. Accommodation in double rooms.
Day 3
Today we will head out to the majestic Nordenskiöld Glacier. After breakfast we go through the basic guidelines for glacier walking and climbing and the safety issues. Then we will explore the glacier that lays just 300 meters away from the cabin. We spend the day on the glacier walking up and down in the glacier cracks and enjoying the shining glacier around us. We will eat expedition lunch on the way. In the evening we make a bonfire and enjoy the view over the fjord. Accommodation in double rooms.
Day 4
Today we can put on your hiking boot and head out of the door to the close by mountains peaks. We will explore the beautiful arctic land, glacier moraines and small flowers surviving in the rash environment. We will reach one of the close by mountain peaks and enjoy expedition lunch on the way. We will return back to the cabin to warm up the sauna and prepare our dinner. Accommodation in double rooms.
Day 5
After breakfast we have a chance for our last hike. We can have one last photo walk to the glacier front or hike to the moraine to take the last pictures of the wildlife and the shiny glacier. We will enjoy lunch at the cabin before returning to the civilization. We return to Longyearbyen by boat and arrive during the afternoon or early evening.
