Join us for a walking tour through the beautiful Nordnes peninsula with its wooden houses, secret alleys & untold stories.
Looking for a unique walking tour in Bergen that takes you away from the busy crowded areas of Bryggen and the Fish Market? Discover one of the best-kept secrets in the city with this walking tour of the Nordnes peninsula.
Many visitors think that Bergen is just Bryggen, the Fish Market and the Funicular. But Bergen is so much more! Bergen is a city full of history and secret charming areas. Nordnes is one of the best-kept secrets in Bergen city centre, and an absolute must for any visitor wanting to see more than the tourist attractions.
Bergen’s Untold History and Secret Alleys is a walking tour that will take you through the secret alleys of the neighbourhood Nordnes. Here we will see a city in transformation - this is where the Norwegians traded while the Hanseatic League controlled Bryggen. Large merchant houses still stand today, but fire and war has transformed Nordnes into a mix of architectural styles. Still, hidden behind the 1950s apartment buildings are preserved streets from the 17th century.
On this tour we will learn about how Norwegians lived and traded in Bergen. We will see different class levels of houses, from the wealthy merchant to the poor sailor.
This tour isn't just about the history of Nordnes - the area has some of the city's best cafes and restaurants if you want to escape the city and live like a local. We will also discuss aspects of everyday life in Bergen, such as our working day and why many people don't own cars.
The goal is to show you different aspects of Bergen and show you some of our favourite spots in the city.
We only have small groups to ensure we can walk in the neighbourhood's small streets without disturbing the locals.
We meet outside a stone white building called Muren. It has a raincoat shop in it called Aksdal, and it directly overlooks the Bergen Harbour and Bryggen.
The tour ends at The Blue Stone (Blåsteinen), a monument located on the main shopping street (Torgallmenningen) just five minutes from the Fish Market.
90 minutes. The walk on cobblestone and we use stairs to go up-hill. The cobblestone can be slippery on a rainy day, so bring good shoes. The walk itself is medium level with a couple steep up-hills and down-hills.
While we walk, the guide talks about the history of Bergen and show you some of our favourite houses, streets, cafes and restaurants.
Because the tour group is small, you can ask endless questions about anything and everything related to Norway, giving you an opportunity to learn about what it’s really like to live in Bergen.
