Experience Klevfos Industrial Museum

At the Industrial Museum, you gain insight into Norwegian wood-processing history and the lives of the workers who were employed there. We take you on an architectural and industrial journey through time, following the entire process from timber to finished paper, surrounded by original machinery, production equipment, and buildings.

The former cellulose and paper factory is a nationally recognized industrial heritage site that operated from 1888 to 1976. It remains well preserved as it stood when production ceased. A guided tour at Klevfos takes you through the factory’s various departments while also providing a glimpse into the everyday lives of the workers and their families. The story presented is not only about technology and production, but also about a physically demanding working life that was closely connected to the local community.

Be sure to set aside time to visit the Munch Centre, located in one of the old buildings at Klevfos. Here, you can discover Edvard Munch’s connection to the village where he was born and the people who helped shape his art. He had a strong bond with the community, and Løten remained a part of him throughout his life.

During the summer season, daily guided tours are offered at both the Industrial Museum and the Munch Centre.

The Munch Centre at Klevfos

The Munch Centre is dedicated to Edvard Munch’s relationship with his birthplace, Løten, and the role it played in his art.

When the Munch Centre in Løten was established, Klevfos was a natural choice of location. The exhibition offers a close and personal perspective on the artist, focusing on his childhood, upbringing, and the people he encountered early in life. Several of Munch’s paintings feature motifs and moods that can be linked to memories from Løten. The light, the landscape, and his experiences there seem to have left their mark on his art, as well as on his development as a person.

New in 2026, you can experience a beautiful and engaging Munch trail of approximately three kilometers, guiding you through the landscape where the artist grew up. The trail includes five stops with texts, images, cultural highlights, and photo points.

The Munch Centre is open by appointment, including outside the museum’s regular opening hours. Please get in touch to arrange a visit.

A vibrant museum area

The museum consists of more than just the factory itself. On the grounds, you will find workers’ housing, a forge, a workshop, and the manager’s residence, Hasselbakken, which clearly illustrates the social distinctions within the industrial community.

The outdoor area is spacious and green, featuring ponds, canals, and excellent opportunities to take a break. There are picnic tables, a playground, swings, a barbecue area, walking trails, and large green spaces, making the area well suited for families and informal gatherings.

Whether you are celebrating a children’s birthday party, a summer event, a barbecue evening, or simply gathering with good friends, Klevfos is an excellent venue. Here, you can enjoy peaceful surroundings both during the day and in the evening.
