Follow the footprints of the old explorers! Mush your own dog team across Spitsbergen just like Amundsen did when he reached the magnetic North Pole in 1904 and sleep at our new North Pole Camp.

TUESDAY: Your guide picks you up in the reception at your hotel at 10 am. With less equipment, and a different goal then Amundsen, we leave Longyearbyen, and head east. Travelling with a team of dogs is a fantastic way to travel. The silence, with only the pathing of the dogs gives you the chance to really enjoy the landscape. Your guide will show you how to harness the dogs and how to mush your own team. Everyone will take care of their own team with guidance from the guide. You will look after your own dogs throughout the trip, and help with feeding. We will drive over vast valleys and through the white landscape to Sassen valley and Tempelfjorden. We will enjoy expedition lunch on the way. In the afternoon we will arrive to our expedition camp. In heated tent with cots and varm sleeping bags, we will spend the nights in tents they today use at the North Pole camp; “Barneo”. After taking care of the dogs, our chef invites you to the dining tent for a delicious dinner.

WEDNESDAY: In the morning, we feed the dogs before enjoying our breakfast with fresh bread and warm coffee. We harness the dogs and head out in the beautiful landscape. We mush on the frozen sea ice, you can see the seals laying on the ice enjoying the warmth of the sun, and if you are lucky you might even see a polar bear hunting. And the majestic Tuna Glacier is one of the highlights today. Dog sledging on Spitsbergen is an experience that touches your soul, with the wideopen landscape and the breath-taking scenery. Expedition lunch will be served on the way. We will return to the camp later in the afternoon for some welldeserved drinks. After the dinner, you can have an evening walk to stretch your legs and greet your dog team before heading to bed. Or maybe you would like to borrow a book from our mini library, with arctic literature.

THURSDAY: This is the last day of dogsledding so we get up early to make the most of the day. Breakfast is served from 8 am after we have feed the dogs. Once more we harness our teams and head out to the wilderness. Today we will drive back to Trappers Station, the home of the dogs. Depending on the weather, the guide will pick the route. Enjoy the view while travelling through the vast valleys. Expedition lunch on the way. Thus we have not reached the north pole on our journey, we have travelled in the spirit of the old explorers! Just like the famous once; Amundsen, Nansen, Wisting and Nobile. We will arrive to Trappers Station later in the afternoon and take care of the tired dogs. We say farewell to our friends that has been pulling the sled for about 120 km the last 3 days. Transport back to Longyearbyen and Basecamp Hotel. Here you can sit down in the lounge and enjoy a beverage or two while talking about the trip you just participated on!

NOTE: During longer dogsledding trips, the dog teams need some help by pushing up the steep hills. For this, you need to be in good physical condition. As part of the expedition, you will participate in feeding and taking care of the dogs. When camping outdoors, we will melt snow, set up the camp and prepare meals together.
This trip is not suitable for persons suffering from back pains. Pregnant women cannot participate on any dog sledding trips arranged by Basecamp Spitsbergen. Basecamp takes no responsibility to any health issues, due to neglecting this advice.
