This is a lovely trip around Storavatnet, the biggest lake on Fitjar.
This is a lovely trip around Storavatnet, the biggest lake on Fitjar.
The trip starts in the centre of Fitjar, where you will find 'Cyclist Welcome' accommodation and bike hire, among other things. Follow the RV 545 road past Fitjar church and cycle southwards. After roughly two km, you come to a forestry plantation. If you like, you can leave your bike here and follow the walking path to Rimbareid on your left. There is a sign with a map at the start of the walk. Walking maps can also be purchased at Tourist Information. When you have cycled a further one km on the RV 545 road, you arrive at the shore of Storavatnet lake. This is also where the 'old road' from Fitjar ends, which is an alternative to the main road if you would like to take a quieter route up to Vik. The road starts to the right of Fitjar church (skyssbrekka). Continue cycling on the walking/cycling path towards Tveita.
After a further two km, you turn left at a gravel car park, where a popular walking path starts. The path then forks in two: One path goes south to Sørlivatnet lake and Klysgard, while the other goes north to Botnavatnet lake and Kidno. Follow the road on past Årbøelva river to the crossroads by the local Joker supermarket. You will find a table and benches there, and it is a good place to have a rest midway in the trip. Then turn right off the RV 545 road towards Koløyholmen. Cycle one km on a narrow country road and then turn right towards Fitjar at the crossroads at Øvrebygda Bedehus. After four km, you can turn right at a small car park, which brings you to Breiavikjo, a public bathing spot on the shore of Storavatnet lake.
The bottom of the lake slopes gradually, and there are tables and benches and a toilet. From there, you cycle one km until you reach a crossroads where you turn left onto the Vestbøstadvegen road.
The road to the right takes you onto 'the old road' and down to Fitjar/Vik. Follow the Vestbøstadvegen road along the sea until you arrive back in the centre of Fitjar.
