At the innermost end of the magnificent Hjørundfjord, in the village of Bjørke, lies Bakketunet with its six listed buildings, the most ancient of which has timbers dating as far back as 1549. This makes it the oldest cluster farm in Sunnmøre still intact, including what is believed to be the oldest stave barn in Norway.
You can imagine yourself transported back to the Middle Ages as you wander around this unique collection of historic buildings, where the dwelling house, barn, stabbur, byre, sheep shed and stable each had its own vital function. For over 400 years these buildings have housed man and livestock in the symbiosis that guarantees life and new generations.
After several years of devoted restoration work, the owners opened the farm to visitors in the summer of 2010.
On the farm you can experience art and craft exhibitions that are integrated into this unique environment. Every year the farm presents a new main exhibition showing the work of artists and craftsmen who make their living from their talents, and every Sunday a new chamber painter will exhibit his or her art and handicrafts.
For those who are interested in gardening the farmyard offers a rich flora of flowers and plants that have been flourishing since the time of great-grandmother
’s garden. Children will enjoy the fun of discovery trails and inspiring painting activities.
In the oldest dwelling from 1549, consisting of two open-hearth rooms, a kitchen and a chamber-room, there is a cafe selling traditional cakes and simple refreshments.
On the farm there is also an Artist’s House, a newly renovated and cosy dwelling that will take you back to grandmother’s days and which is available for let to visitors who wish to spend more time in the area.
Opening hours: Based on summerseson, every Saturday and Sunday from 12 noon – 1700 hrs. Visits to the farm outside opening hours by special arrangement.
