Batteri Sonique

Overview

Batterie Sonique - sound art at Karljohansvern by Lars Petter Hagen.

Batterie Sonique is an addition to the artillery at Karljohansvern, which until now has lacked an underwater sound cannon.

Unlike traditional weapons, the underwater sound cannon is not dangerous. It is, in fact, the opposite: it is a sonic anti-weapon. The sound cannon emanates soothing music.

The music creates a harmonious, inclusive and friendly atmosphere, which makes soldiers on enemy submarines in the Oslo Fjord reduce their levels of aggression and adopt a receptive and reflective approach that leads to constructive collaborations between nations and cultures.

In times of low enemy activity, people arriving by boat or visiting the beach can listen to the music, which ca be heard under water or through small boats that can transmit the sounds.

When the underwater sound cannon is active, a light will emanate from the barrel. The cannon will be tested twice a day: at noon an at 10 p.m.

Scientific experiments show that fish react positively to music played at a moderate level without sudden sound impulses.

This work of art is part of the National Fortication Heritage's project "New life on historical grounds" and is one of several works of art created for fortresses across Norway. Some of the country's leading light and sound artists have created site-specific works that reflect the history of the location while having contemporary resonance. The project is supported by the DnB NOR Saving Bank Foundation.
