Overview

There are a number of stories of boaters who turned around at Kjelling because they believed that was where the fjord ended. The fjord is only 6 metres wide at Ferris Sound.

On Wednesday, Friday and Sunday, you can take an unforgettable boat trip in through the Beiar Fjord and back with the boat dock at Kjelling as your starting point. The Beiar Fjord splits into several basins at some of the narrow sounds among which the innermost one is the largest. There are a number of stories of boaters who turned around at Kjelling because they believed that was where the fjord ended. The fjord is only 6 metres wide at Ferris Sound. Once you have come through the sound, the Beiar Fjord widens up in all its splendour. The banks are steep and polished smooth, especially toward the north and east. The fjord is most known for its potholes, which are round sunken areas that have eroded in the rock. They were formed in glacial rivers toward the end of the last Ice Age. The melt water set the rocks and sediment in a rotating motion and carved out holes in the rock formations along the Beiar Fjord.
