Askvika is a coastal estuary surrounded by pastures, cultivated land and forest. It is the most important resting ground for shorebirds and other waterbirds between Herdla and Giske. This wetland system can be divided in three sections interconnected by a river. At the mouth is Askvika, a tidal zone crossed by a causeway. Further up is the brackish lake Leira, and above it Kylleren, a deeper freshwater lake. The latter has natural bacteria producing hydrogen sulphide with a foul smell. Eagle Owl breeds in the vicinity.
