Hammervatnet is one of the most bird-rich fresh-water lakes of Central Norway. It is 6 km long and surrounded by damp woods and cultivated fields, supporting good numbers of Whooper Swans, ducks and other species of waterbird, particularly during migration and as long as it is not completely frozen in winter. In late summer, thousands of Swallows roost by the lake. Uncommon species like Pochard and Little Grebe or even rarer birds are regularly found.
