The mountains between Gausdal and Valdres is called Huldreheimen, or “the home of Huldra”, Huldra being a beautiful and seductive female forest creature from Norwegian folklore. The area is a remote wilderness dominated by marshes flanked by pine and birch woods, and with a rich bird life. The only traces of human activity is a limited degree of traditional dairy farming. A nice selection of birds can be found in the vicinity of the road-side ponds by Kittilbu Wildlife Museum, including Crane, Slavonian Grebe and Great Snipe.
