Birdwatching in historical Ørland

  • Rådhusgata 10, Ørland

Situated at the outskirts of the Trondheimsfjord, Ørland offers outstanding Norwegian nature and unique history. From Trondheim, you can travel by express boat to Brekstad, which takes about one hour.

When you are visiting Ørland we strongly recommend that you visit the historical place of Austrått. One of the biggest attractions here is the Austrått manor. This is one of the oldest manors in Norway, dating back as early as the Viking Period. The manor offers guided tours for those who want to learn more about this interesting place. Not far from the manor lies "Austråttlunden". This is a landscape area with a rich and special flora and fauna, facilitated with walkways. On this area, you can visit the Austrått Fort, which is a fortification build by the occupying German forces during the World War 2. There are also possibilities for guided tours with experienced guides. Close to Austrått camping you can see the ancient burial mounds, called "Skjeggehaugene".

The Wetland-area in Ørland offers remarkable scenery and is a paradise for birdwatchers. Around 240 different species of birds are registered in this area. We recommend visiting Grandefjæra nature reserve, which has a bird tower and an outdoor amphitheatre. These places are excellent for bringing a camera and binoculars. Guided tours are also a possibility and if you are lucky you can catch a glimpse of the majestic sea eagle.

For those of you who are more adventurous you can combine birdwatching, fishing and sea rafting.

For the more relaxed people, you can take a relaxing stroll amongst the fishermen`s houses from the 1800`s. Sjøgata is located along the beach in the old port area of Uthaug.

From Uthaug you can travel to Kjeungskjær lighthouse. This is the only octagonal lighthouse in Norway and it is open for tours and rental. This is an unique opportunity to experience the rough, Norwegian coastal nature up close.

For the active tourist, it is possible to rent a bike and ride around Ørland through Austrått. The coastal landscape is perfect for cycling and it is an easy ride. It is a perfect way to see the attractions and get first-hand experience with the Norwegian nature.

On the shore of Brekstad lies a beautiful hotel, Ørland Kysthotell. They offer amazing food experiences and unique theme-based rooms so that you can enjoy the tranquillity and a little luxury.
