Birdwatching Smøla (Veiholmen)

  •  /  km From You
Overview

Smøla is situated off the coast of Nordmøre and consists of one main island and more than 5,500 smaller islands and skerries. The main island is 20 km in diameter, flat and covered in heather and marshlands, some of it cultivated. Smøla is reckoned as one of the most important breeding areas for seabirds in Norway. It also has the densest population of White-tailed Eagle anywhere in the World. A large windfarm has been built here, though, with windmills regularly killing a number of eagles and also the endemic Smøla Ptarmigans.
