Starmoen forest fire area is one of a very few remaining breeding grounds for Ortolan Bunting in Norway. This area of dry pine forest was struck by a fire in 1976, and the process of regrowing the forest has been slow, producing nice Ortolan habitat. Woodlark, Hobby, Red-backed Shrike and Parrot Crossbill may also be found. The forest roads east of Starmoen leads through prime habitat for Great Grey Owl.
