Vast numbers of sea ducks, divers and grebes rest and winter near the small island of Tautra in the Trondheimsfjord. The area is considered to be one of the most important bird sites in the country, just over an hour’s drive from Trondheim. Tautra is connected to the mainland via a 2.5 km causeway over the sound Tautersvaet (Svaet). The causeway was built in the 1970’s and was originally constructed as a continuous breakwater, blocking the vital natural flow of water through the sound.
