The Alta delta is formed at the mouths of two rivers, Altaelva and the smaller Tverrelva. The delta spreads out in the Alta fjord like a fan with a diameter of 4 km. At low tide, exposed mud is found in a continuous belt from Alta to Rafsbotn, 11 km to the east. This makes the Alta delta one of the best sites for shorebirds in western Finnmark.
