Birdwatching Utsira

Utsira has long traditions of birdwatching and is compared by some to Fair Isle (south of Shetland). Peak season is April - May, and September - November.

Utsira is a birdwatcher's paradise, with more recorded bird species than permanent residents. The island has a rich tradition of birdwatching and attracts enthusiastic birdwatchers from all over the world. With over 333 recorded bird species, including rare species, Utsira is one of Norway's most exciting places for birdwatching.

When is the season for birdwatching on Utsira?

The birdwatching season on Utsira is all year round, but the main season is between 15 April - 15 May and 1 September - 1 November. In week 40, ‘bomb week’ is organised, when the island is filled with birdwatchers who all have a great desire to discover rare bird species. This is because migratory birds that get lost on their way from north to south often come to rest on islands like Utsira.
