Leave the E6 north of Lillehammer or at Vinstra (Gudbrandsdalen), and you will find yourself on route 255 "Bjørnsonvegen", a beautiful stretch of national highway. The road leads through a rich cultural landscape, from picturesque farms in the lowlands of Vestre Gausdal to the high mountains of Espedalen and the stunning historic architecture and spectacular steep meadows at one of Norway's highest-altitude villages at Skåbu.

One of the places of interest along route 255 - Bjørnsonvegen - is Aulestad, the home of the writer Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson - author of Norway's national anthem. Lining the route are small village churches, art galleries, theatres and handicrafts shops. Don't miss the impressive potholes. Take in a summer concert, enjoy a visit to a mountain farm, hire a boat, go fishing by one of the many lakes, experience horseback riding or simply ramble or cycle through the district. You can choose from a wide range of overnight accommodation and excellent places to eat, all rooted in local culture and traditions.

Route 255 - Bjørnsonvegen - makes for a rewarding detour from the E6, but it is also offers the opportunity to continue across the mountains via the Jotunheimen road, across Valdresflya and on to the fjord region on the west coast. It is also possible to enjoy a day trip via route 255 - Bjørnsonvegen - to Espedalen and return via the Peer Gynt route. We wish you a warm welcome to a unique experience in this "small piece of Norway".
