In literary, cultural and political sense Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson was a great cultural personality of his time.
He fought for freedom and justice for the oppressed and for the small nations’ right to freedom and independence.
Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson wrote novels, plays and a great number of poems, as well as thousands of letters, articles and speeches.
Bjørnson has written our national anthem ”Ja, vi elsker”.
In 1903 Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson was awarded the Nobel prize in Literature for the whole body of his work.
Aulestad has a beautiful garden that is an experience in itself. The garden is open to the public all day.
