Blue Vision is a viewing center for salmon farming.
By visiting Blue Vision you will learn about modern, Norwegian aquaculture through interactive screens and live footage from our facilities at sea. We had the official opening in January 2018 and is the only viewing center for Norwegian salmon production in Tromsø. We are located on the 2nd floor at Kystens Hus, where there also are other dissemination areas about fishery and aquaculture and Norwegian seafood. The viewing center’s opening hours is Monday-Friday from 08:00-16:00. Free entrance.
The viewing center is owned by the fish farming company Gratanglaks AS, which is located in Gratangen municipality. Gratanglaks operates a joint venture with Kleiva Fiskefarm AS, which together covers the entire line of salmon production by owning a smolt plant (Astafjord Smolt), several fish farm facilities and a slaughterhouse (Astafjord Slakteri). In order to improve people’s knowledge of aquaculture, Gratanglaks established the viewing center in Tromsø to bring the industry closer to the people.
The viewing center is divided into two zones where the first zone contains interactive screens, and the other is a control room where we have live footage from our facilities.
Through interactive screens you’ll get an insight in Norwegian salmon production by learning more about:
- The history of Norwegian salmon production.
- The breeding process in salmon farming through a game.
- The life cycle of the salmon and see real salmon at different lifecycles.
- The feed composition as well as see and smell real salmon feed.
- How the fish are fed via the feeding center on land using live footage.
- The challenges for the aquaculture industry and solutions used to tackle the challenges in a sustainable way.
- New technology in the industry
- Ripple effects created by the aquaculture industry.
- Preparations required to produce salmon in the sea.
As well as interactive screens, we have a 3D-printed model of the most used salmon cage. This shows how the cage looks like under water and gives an idea of how big they can be. Under the salmon cage there are various screens with pictures and films from our facilities, both at sea and on land.
In addition, we have developed a test that visitors can take to see which profession related to the aquaculture industry that suits their interests. It is adapted for adolescents aged 12-19, but anyone can take the test to learn more about different professions that may be of interest.
In the control room you can experience how it is to work at a feeding center, also called control center, and how to perform daily tasks related to feeding. Today, most companies in the industry use camera as an aid during feeding. Using surface and subsurface cameras, one can monitor the behavior of the salmon as well as take into account other important factors to perform an optimal feeding for the salmon and the environment.
