Coal Mine 3 Visit - Gruve 3 AS

  • +47 48100640
  •  /  km From You
Overview
Details

Longyearbyen would most likely not exist if it wasn't for the mining industry. Come visit Mine 3 and learn about our town's fundamental mining history.

Are you curious about the coal mining industry in Longyearbyen and the history behind why some men decided to settle here some 100 years ago?

Join us on a tour into Gruve 3 (Mine 3) and get a feeling of the working conditions of a coal miner in the last low-drifted mine in Longyearbyen. Gruve 3 was operational between 1971-1996 and the working height was no more than 60-90 cm. Old-fashioned methods were therefore applied to extract the coal.

When production was stopped in November 1996, all the machinery and equipment were left behind in the facility – none of it could be used in Mine 7 or Svea. You can expect an authentic tour into the facility located outside the mountain until we enter one of the main tunnels of the mine. We will then continue into two of the side tunnels where the first seed bank on Svalbard is located as well as the Arctic World Archive.

Sharpen your ears and prepare for a historical and exciting tour into one of Longyearbyen’s coal mines!

NB!
We require minimum 2 guests to hold a visit.
Age limit: 12 years old.

Transport: Pick-up and drop-off at your chosen hotel/guesthouse in town. Drop-off at the airport can be arranged (must be confirmed with us prior to your scheduled booking due to luggage space in the car/bus).

Clothing/equipment: Helmets and headlamps are handed out to all our guests. In light of the current pandemic and to prevent further spread of Covid-19, our guests are currently not given the option to wear a miner's coverall.

The facility and mine are cold. Dress for the outdoor temperature. Warm jacket and pants, wool, warm shoes, gloves and hat are recommended.

Languages: Norwegian/Scandinavian and English. Be aware that most of our tours are held in English. NB: Translation from group leaders only possible on private tours.

Physical requirements: This tour suits most people with a normal physical fitness. Not suitable for wheelchair users.

Other: We have a venue available to hire for your private events. A venue hire can be combined with a mine visit. Contact us directly for a quote.
