Visit Edvard Munch's preserved home in Åsgårdstrand and discover the rooms where he lived and worked.
Munch's House is located in Åsgårdstrand, in the municipality of Horten, and is the only surviving home of Edvard Munch. On a guided tour, you can step inside the artist's small, yellow-painted wooden house and explore the rooms where he lived and worked. Discover a more personal side of one of Norway's most famous artists in the surroundings that inspired many of his paintings.
Step inside Edvard Munch's home
Edvard Munch bought the house in 1898 after spending several summers in Åsgårdstrand. It was the first property he owned and a place he returned to throughout much of his life. The house retains its historic character, with rooms and interiors offering a glimpse into Munch's everyday life. During the guided tour, you will learn about his years in Åsgårdstrand, the people he met and how his experiences influenced his art. The garden also contains Munch's studio. The original studio building was demolished, but another building was later erected on the same site.
The landscape that inspired Munch
Åsgårdstrand played an important role in Munch's artistic development. The shoreline, narrow streets, gardens and local residents all became subjects of his paintings. Several well-known works, including "Girls on the Bridge", "Four Girls in Åsgårdstrand" and "The Dance of Life", have close connections to the town. You can still recognise parts of the landscape while exploring Åsgårdstrand. Discover more about the places associated with his paintings in Visit Vestfold's guide to Munch's House in Åsgårdstrand.
Walk in Munch's footsteps
Munch's House offers guided tours of the artist's home and walks through the historic streets of Åsgårdstrand. The guided walk explores Munch's relationship with the town and visits places connected to his life and paintings. It also includes a tour of the house. At the former town hall in central Åsgårdstrand, you can visit Digital Munch, which offers further insights into the artist's life through digital storytelling. The museum shop is also located here.
A historic artist's home
Following Munch's death in 1944, the local municipality purchased the property. The house opened as a museum in 1947, and the property received protected heritage status in 2013. Today, Munch's House offers visitors a closer understanding of the artist's home and the surroundings that meant so much to him.
Plan your visit
Munch's House is located at Edvard Munchs gate 25 in Åsgårdstrand, a short walk from the harbour. The museum opens seasonally, normally from May to September, with scheduled guided tours. In September, regular opening hours are Saturday and Sunday from 11 am to 4 pm. Opening days and guided tour times vary throughout the season. The house can only be visited on a guided tour. Tickets can be purchased at the studio or museum shop, and private group tours can be arranged in advance.
The historic house and studio have steps, thresholds and narrow doorways that limit accessibility. Parking near the museum is very limited, and visitors are advised to use the parking facilities at Åsgårdstrand harbour.
Check the official Munch's House website for current opening hours, admission prices and guided tour information before visiting.
