We start the trip by driving through the narrow valleys Todalen and Bødalen, heading south west through a varied landscape. Soon we will arrive in Coles Bay, by Kapp Laila, on the south side of Isfjorden. Here we will find tracks from Russian mining activity, old houses and some new infrastructure. We continue along the coast, with many fine views to take photos of. After passing Kapp Heer, the Russian heliport, we will arrive in the charming community of Barentsburg. The houses, the people and all the little details are interesting and fascinating. Here we will have lunch, before continuing our trip east into the valleys Grøndalen and Semmeldalen. After driving through the different valleys and the changing landscape we will start climbing with the snowmobiles up a long hill to the top of the Longyearbreen. The view over Longyearbyen from up here must be experienced, looking over the tiny settlement in this enormous arctic nature. After this we have only 10 kilometres to go before we are back in Longyearbyen. Duration 7-8 hours, the trip is about 120 kilometres to drive.
A valid driver’s licence for car or motorbike is required to drive a snowmobile. Remember to take it with you on the tour. The passenger does not need to have a driver’s licence.
