Overview

Kiberg is a village in Vardø Municipality in eastern Troms og Finnmark county, Norway. It is located on the eastern end of the Varanger Peninsula, along the Barents Sea. Two women from Kiberg, Mari Jørgensdatter and Kirsti Sørensdatter, were burned at the stake during the 1621 witch trials in Vardø. During the days of the Pomor trade, which was ended as a result of changes ushered in by the Russian revolution in 1917, Kiberg was a centre of Russian activity, to such as extent that the village was called "Lille Moskva" (Little Moscow). 45 men from the village served in Russia's military.18 of these partisans survived the war, and 17 returned to the village.

> Visit east cape at Kibergnesset in Varanger
Kibergneset, locally pronounced Kibergnesset, is the easternmost point on the Norwegian mainland. The entire area was turned into a giant coastal fortress during the war. Take a look at the map inside the Partisan Museum and take a walk among crumbling concrete and cannon positions, but avoid going into cavities and into impassable caves. It is never known whether the de-miners got everything out after the war. From here you can see Russia on a clear day.

> Birding Kiberg, Vardø
Kiberg is a haven for gulls, with many hundreds of Glaucous Gulls recorded during the later part of winter, with several Iceland Gulls joining the flocks each year. Kibergsneset (aka East Cape), the furthest east you can go in mainland Norway, is a very good point to watch the huge rafts of King Eiders, Common Eiders and Long-tailed Ducks during late winter and early spring. This is also a very good seawatching point for seabird migration in spring and autumn. Skuas of all four species can be seen passing offshore.

> The Partisan monuments
In front of the old boarding school are two monuments, one erected by the Norwegian state and one donated by Russia. Both honour the efforts young women and men made during World War II, when they moved from Kiberg to the Soviet Union to be trained in guerrilla activities. They returned as partisans who provided information on German troop movements to the Allies. This was an extremely dangerous activity, and the losses were great both among the partisans and among the locals who helped them. Everything is explained in detail and coherently inside the museum.

Welcome to Varanger Arctic Norway

In the far north and as far east as you can go in Norway, where the sky meets the sea, lies Varanger, bathed in the midnight sun and the northern lights of winter. Here the wild landscape meanders through bird-nesting cliffs, fishing villages, and rugged headlands – out to the end of the world.
Nature offers rivers teeming with fish, snow-clad plains, exotic king crabs, birds breeding in spring, leaping salmon, the shining sea, and dancing northern lights. People and traditions make Varanger an Arctic melting pot of communities and cultures. Varanger is a different experience. Scenery and settlements, the light, the colours, the lofty sky and wide horizon, exciting activities and the open people.
