Vardetangen in Austrheim north of Bergen is Norway's westernmost mainland point. The walk is 1 kilometer and is suitable for both prams and wheelchairs.
Vardetangen is popular hiking destination in the Muncipality of Austrheim north of Bergen. The characteristic stone cairn was erected in 1996, and include the locations coordinates drawn on a stone tablet. This walk is on a gravel road, and is approximately 1 kilometer from the car park at Torvneset. It is an easy trip that is suitable for families with children.
Vardetangen is about an hour's drive from Bergen. Follow road 57 to Kaland, and then the road 565. It is not signposted to Vardetangen, but turn right at the sign for "Snøggbåtkaien" (the boat harbor).
The hike is on relatively flat terrain through heather and forest, with a view of the mountains in Gulen in the background. The trail has a universal design and is suitable for both prams and wheelchairs. A day trip cabin has been built at Vardetangen which can provide shelter from the weather, is a great place to enjoy your packed lunch. The cabin is equipped with benches and a wood-burning stove, and has a small library of children's books that can be borrowed on site.
At the cairn you can enjoy the view towards the islets and the archipelago in Austrheim, and the mountains in Gulen and Masfjorden. There is also a small pothole that was formed towards the end of the last ice age.
If you want a longer walk, you can take a round trip via Fonnes back to Torvneset. The return will then be around 4 kilometers.
Parking:
The starting point for the tour is Torvneset. There is parking both at the starting point and at the harbour.
Toilet:
There is a toilet available close to the cabin.
Would you like some hot food and drink after the trip? Kielstraumen Brygge is just a short drive away.
