Join us for an exciting and speedy open boat fjord safari past the Russian city of Barentsburg, on to the beautiful Kapp Linnè and Isfjord Radio.
Barentsburg is the second largest settlement on Svalbard, with about 400 inhabitants. Russians bought Barentsburg from the Netherlands in the 30s. The total population of Barentsburg, Grumant and Pyramiden combined, once made the majority of residents on Svalbard. Today Barentsburg is the only remaining Russian settlement. The people who live and work here are mostly from Russia or Ukraine. Barentsburg is a "Company city", and is primarily engaged in mining and some tourism. The settlement was razed during WW2. Nevertheless there is a lingering historic atmosphere, with Lenin at the top of the hill looking overlooking his people. Barentsburg has its own coal power plant, hospital, museum, hotel, school, kindergarten and culture and sports center. In addition they have pig barns and greenhouses. We will visit Barentsburg for a tour and we have the opportunity to buy souvenirs before heading to Isfjord Radio.
Some days we might visit Isfjord Radio before Barentsburg for lunch.
At the outermost part of Isfjorden, at Kapp Linnè, we find the station Isfjord Radio, about 90 km from Longyearbyen and without any road access.
Previously this was the hub for all telecommunication services to the mainland, but this function is now replaced by broadband connection. Isfjord Radio was first etsablished in 1933, but was destroyed during the evacuation of Svalbard in 1941. The station was not rebuilt until after the war. A delicious hot lunch is served before we return to Longyearbyen.
